The first of 10 concerts that will take place at the Del Mar racetrack this year began with the Pinback concert this past Friday, July 23rd.
What's so great about this concert series aside from the acts playing, which include Common Sense, Ozomatli, and Weezer? There is no additional fee to get into a concert. Simply pay parking and racetrack admission on a concert day and you get to attend that day's concert for FREE.
The concerts take place each Friday night of the Del Mar racing season, and on 4 select Saturdays. To make it easier on you, here's a summary of the math:
If you show up before the last race of the day. Your best bet is to get to the racetrack before the last race of the day in order to take advantage of the $8 parking and the $6 Stretch Run admission. This means that if you plan on going to a Friday concert, get to the racetrack before 7:00pm; if you plan on going to a Saturday concert, get to the racetrack before 6:00pm; and, when you get to the ticket booth, ask for the Stretch Run admission.
If you show up after the last race of the day. Basically, you pay $16 more than you would have if you "suffered" through the last race of the day. This is because parking becomes $10 and admission to the racetrack climbs to $20 after the last race.
The concerts are standing room early, so don't bother making the extra purchase for Stretch Run reserved seats unless you intend to make a race day of it. Simply make sure to wear comfortable shoes. I'm looking at you too, gents.
Plus, there is no such thing as "selling out" of admission tickets to the racetrack, so there isn't a need to purchase tickets in advance.
If you're willing to splurge a bit more, then consider keeping yourself free on Saturday, August 21st. Preceding the Weezer concert that day is the Del Mar Beer Fest. The Del Mar Beer Fest runs from noon to 6pm and attendance to it is free with your track admission. Note, though, that if you want to sample beers, then you'll need to pony up a bit more cash per beer. Can't decide on what to taste? Then purchase a $15 wristband and get 5 sample (7oz.) size beers of your choice. Considering that a can of beer is 12oz. a pop, if you go with the $15 wristband, you're basically purchasing the equivalent of 3 beers.
Summer nights in San Diego just get easier and easier to plan.
